Tilak Nagar: Posh residential area facing multiple problems

Bengaluru: Tilak Nagar, a posh residential area in the city with individual houses and duplex flats, is facing multiple problems including power cuts, open storm water drains, burning of garbage, and illegal parking.
The ward in Bengaluru experiences frequent power cuts, sometimes lasting for several hours.
This has become a major inconvenience for residents, who are forced to go for work, school, and other activities amid power cut at home. While most residents have bought an inverter or generator for power backup, some residents allege that they are living here temporarily and it seemed ‘impractical’ for them to invest in an inverter or generator.
Blaming power cut in the ward as a major inconvenience, a couple said, “We were forced to buy an inverter for power backup as no action was initiated by authorities concerned even after several complaints.”
Meanwhile, the open and overflowing storm water drains in the ward are a major cause of flooding during the monsoon season. The stagnant water also leads to the breeding of mosquitoes.
Although, the roads are well-maintained, after every heavy rain, they are prone to flooding due to their hilly and undulating nature. The water flows down the inclined roads and collects in the low-lying areas causing flood.
Unauthorised burning of garbage in empty plots is also a major concern of air pollution and health problems for the residents of Tilak Nagar.
Residents have alleged that the BBMP has been turning a blind eye to their problem, and instead of clearing the garbage, they are simply burning it.
This is a dangerous and illegal practice, which is causing serious health problems for the residents. The ward, is a luxurious residential area, where the residents own more than one vehicle per family, leading to lack of parking spaces.
This has increased illegal parking on the streets, blocking roads and making it difficult for pedestrians to walk. The area is also flooded with several mechanic and automobile shops, who park their vehicles on the road as well.
One of the biggest problems is the presence of stray cattle, which often eat garbages and pollute the streets. This has become a major health hazard for residents, as well as the cattle.
A person who owns a laundry shop in the area said cows eat plastic covers that are on the roads and move in groups causing traffic disruption. Despite all these problems, Tilak Nagar is still a nice place to live.
The area is well-maintained, with wide roads and well-lit street lights. The problems facing Tilak Nagar are complex and will require a multi-pronged approach to solve.
The BBMP needs to work with the residents of the ward to develop a plan to address the problems.
