Bengaluru: As a response to the rain shortage in Belgavi, the Karnataka government has granted approval to a proposal put forth by two private companies for cloud seeding.
Kyathi Climate Modification Consultants (LLP) and Belgaum Sugars Private Limited, the two private companies, had initially approached the district administration seeking permission for self-funded cloud seeding.
Subsequently, this request was forwarded to the Revenue Department in Bengaluru for deliberation. Following careful consideration, TC Kantaraj, the Joint Secretary of the Revenue Department, has granted authorisation for cloud seeding.
The permission letter also bears the approval of Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda. The letter outlines the requirement for the applicants to secure all necessary legal permissions before proceeding with the cloud seeding operation.
It designates Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil to oversee the entire process and provide guidance as needed. The precise date for the cloud seeding operation remains uncertain, but it is anticipated to occur in the coming week, pending final approvals from relevant authorities.
Cloud seeding is employed to induce rainfall in specific areas. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasised that August proved to be a particularly dry month for the state, with a significant rainfall deficit of 73 per cent.
