Bengaluru: A 30-year-old woman and her two daughters died after their speeding car rammed into an incoming truck and bounced onto the road median before catching a fire on the NICE Road near Sompura toll plaza in the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.
The car was driven by the woman's husband, Mahendran S, 35, who is currently being treated at a nearby private hospital. He is said to be working as a software engineer in Bengaluru.
The deceased woman was identified as Sindhu, and her daughters as Kushavi, 4, and Pranavi, 6.
It was learnt that the family originally hailed from Salem in Tamil Nadu but had been residing in Vijinapura near Ramamurthy Nagar in the city.
The incident took place around 2:50 am when Mahendran, along with his wife and two children, was heading towards Kanakapura Road from Mysuru Road via NICE tollway.
Speaking to News Trail, Talaghattapura Traffic Police said that the car, Tata Nexon, the family was travelling in crashed into a truck coming from the opposite direction on Sompura Clover Leaf Junction on NICE road.
It is learnt that Mahendran had rented the car to visit Nagasandra with family. Following an inspection of the spot, the police said that Prima facie, it looks like Mahendran was overspeeding and lost control of the car when he found an incoming truck on the road.
"The impact of the collision was so high that the car was thrown onto the median wall and caught fire while the truck driver lost control and the vehicle overturned," the police official said.
While Mahendran and his elder daughter managed to get out of the vehicle, Sindhu and Kushavi got trapped inside and were charred to death. Mahendran and Pranavi were shifted to a hospital but unfortunately Pranavi too succumbed to injuries later in the day without responding to the treatment.
An official said that the bodies have been shifted to the KIMS hospital for postmortem.
A case has been registered against Mahendran for rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence. Further investigation is on.
