Bengaluru: In an effort to enhance the lushness of the city, the "Green Bengaluru" initiative is gearing up to plant more than 90,000 sapplings during the upcoming year of 2023-24, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said in Tuesday.

Spearheaded by the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, the initiative aims to transform the city into a much greener place substantially.

In its notification, the BBMP said that the aim is not only to mitigate environmental challenges but also to engage and educate the community on the importance of green spaces.

A collaboration has been made between approximately 250 government and private schools and colleges, involving the participation of around 50,000 students.

The "Green Bengaluru" program sets out to provide comprehensive information to the general public regarding the trees planted throughout the city.

This includes details on the number of trees already planted by students from various educational institutions and the officials overseeing the program.

The Forest Department is taking an approach to support this eco-friendly cause by distributing seedlings from their nurseries to the public, free of charge.
