BBMP to crack down on business name boards violating Kannada display rule

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is gearing up to address non-compliance with the requirement for business establishments to prominently display nameboards in Kannada, allocating 60 per cent of the space to the language, and 40 per cent to English.

In Bengaluru, a city with a diverse population representing various languages, some non-Kannadiga residents run shops, trade centres, business facilities, factories, and industries.

There have been allegations of non-compliance with the rule, as many businesses are displaying nameboards primarily in English. To rectify this, the BBMP is taking action against such establishments.

This initiative follows a 2017 circular from BBMP, emphasising the importance of allocating 60% of name board space to Kannada.

Failure to adhere to this requirement could result in the cancellation of trade licenses. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath explained that the rule was implemented in 2019.
