Bengaluru: Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Managing Director Sathyavathi G in an exclusive interview with News Trail, sheds light on their plans to expand the bus fleet, improve frequency, enhance safety measures, and explore technological advancements.

Here are excerpts.

Q) How is BMTC planning to improve and augment public transportation in Bengaluru?

We've implemented the NICE Road route which has cut down commuting time by nearly 3 hours. Looking ahead, we are committed to expanding both our bus fleet and the number of routes in the coming months, aiming to further enhance the convenience of public transportation for all.

Q) How has the response to the Namma BMTC application been?

The Namma BMTC application has received positive feedback for its realtime bus tracking feature.

The route planning feature has also been praised for helping commuters find the best way to reach their destination. Some users have found the app to be useful in planning their journeys and avoiding long waits at bus stops.

Q) How is BMTC planning to enhance the effectiveness of metro feeder buses in the city?

Despite Metro feeder buses figuring in our long-term plans for last-mile connectivity, synchronising bus timings with the metro schedule presents a challenge. Collaborating with BMRCL, we aim for seamless transportation.

Q) What's BMTC's vision for private collaboration in improving public transportation, with ongoing partnerships or initiatives?

We've established partnerships with TATA and JBM for electric and AC buses, and recently with Intel to integrate advanced driver alert systems aimed at preventing fatal accidents.

While this is in its early stages, we are in the process of collaborating with Continental, an IIT Delhibased company.

Q) How does BMTC plan to enhance bus frequency, reduce waiting time, and optimise route schedules to streamline operations?

We've implemented realistic timeframes for drivers and commuters through accurate data collection.

Unlike in the past, when routes were estimated at a shorter time frame, we now provide precise information, allowing drivers and commuters to plan accordingly.

Q) What safety initiatives is BMTC implementing to ensure passenger well-being?

The Nirbhaya project is active, with over 5000 buses now equipped with CCTV cameras. Each bus is fitted with panic buttons, ensuring rapid alerts to the nearest police station for prompt assistance.

Q) What safety initiatives is BMTC implementing to ensure drivers, conductors and employees’ well-being by addressing concerns such as mental and physical health?

Well aware that we have 8-hour drives in Bengaluru, we've partnered with Jayadeva Hospital for scheduled check-ups for drivers over 45. Regular health camps benefit all, and we're planning zone-wise counsellors for a stress-free work environment.

Q) What technological advancements is BMTC exploring to enhance the passenger experience, especially for people with disabilities (PwD)?

In collaboration with Continental, our goal is to offer audio devices for visually challenged commuters, ensuring real-time bus tracking and information announcements.

Additionally, we plan to incorporate ramps or low-rise stairs in all new buses to enhance accessibility for wheelchair users.

Q) How does BMTC obtain community feedback on public transport, and which communication channels are utilised for this?

In addition to surprise inspections engaging with commuters, social media plays a crucial role in monitoring consumer grievances and suggestions. We also aim to establish a toll-free number for convenient feedback submission.

Q) What is your main goal for BMTC in the long run?

My objective for BMTC is clear: instil confidence in commuters regarding punctuality, safety, and the reliability of information on bus schedules, frequency, and safety measures.
