'70 foeticidesmonthly, babies thrown into Cauvery river'

Mandya: After the Mandya police dismantled a female foeticide and gender-selective abortion network in the Mandya district, Manjula, the head nurse at Mata Hospital in Mysuru, has been apprehended in connection with the case.

Confessing her involvement, Manjula revealed that she assisted in the abortion of at least two six-month-old babies monthly over an extended period.

According to Manjula, she participated in approximately 70 infanticides each month, extracting six-monthold infants who were still alive.

Describing the process, she reportedly explained that a six-month-old baby, lacking the ability to survive, would succumb within 5-10 minutes after being removed from the womb.

The infants were then wrapped in paper and handed over to an individual named Nisar, who disposed of them in the Cauvery River.

Additionally, Manjula disclosed that they routinely aborted 12-week-old embryos, discarding them as medical waste, which would decompose in four days.

Manjula, who had been working with Dr. Chandan Ballal for the past year, took on the responsibility of performing abortions after another nurse, Reshma, left her position.

During the investigation, Manjula admitted that Nisar disposed of the infants in the river, but she remained unaware of the specific location to avoid drawing police attention.

She explained that the lack of advanced scanning machines sometimes hindered their ability to determine the gender of the fetus.
