Mercury dips to 10 degrees in Vijayapura

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: As the fourth week of December got underway, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Vijayapura city had on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the plains of the state.

The weather department pointed out that regions of a higher altitude, hill stations and the like witness colder temperatures than that.

“Vijayapura recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celisus in the plains of the state,” an IMD bulletin said.

Earlier, the mercury hadn’t dipped so low because of the effect of ‘El Nino’ on the state and the larger subcontinent. ‘El Nino’ or abnormal warming of the surface water in the equatorial Pacific Ocean had resulted in suppression of rainfall (in the northern hemisphere).

It has also caused a slightly warmer winter.
