Bengaluru: For tis Hospital Cunningham Road in Bengaluru has marked a medical breakthrough by successfully treating a 12-year-old boy from Assam suffering from voiding dysfunction due to a neurogenic bladder birth defect.
Led by Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy and Dr Shakir Tabrez, the expert urology team diagnosed the condition as nerve entrapment in the spinal cord.
The neurogenic bladder occurs when nerves transmitting signals between the brain and the bladder are dysfunctional, leading to difficulties emptying the bladder.
The team performed a Mitrofanoff AppendicoVesicostomy, a complex surgical intervention where the appendix is utilised to create a pathway for catheter insertion through an abdominal opening.
This method allows periodic painless catheterisation through the abdominal wall, providing a convenient alternative for bladder emptying compared to the urethra.
The young patient, who had endured a lifetime of incomplete bladder emptying, was discharged just two days post-surgery with a catheter, facilitating urine drainage and ensuring a more comfortable recovery process.
Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, emphasised the importance of regular check-ups for young patients to prevent potential healthcare issues.
Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road reaffirms its commitment to advanced medical care and transformative solutions for patients facing complex urological challenges.
