Private transport federation commends state gov't for scrapping bike taxi scheme

Bengaluru: The withdrawal of the bike taxi scheme by the State Government, as announced on March 6, 2024, is warmly welcomed by the Union of Private Transport Organisations.
The federation, led by its president, expresses sincere gratitude to Media Friends, the Transport Minister, and the Chief Minister for their decisive action in response to the inadvertent misuse of the initiative.
Initially conceived to combat air pollution, the ambitious project of introducing electric two-wheelers became a means for national and international corporations to exploit the system.
Violations of state and central regulations by large companies resulted in disorder and posed a threat to the livelihoods of over seven lakh families, including auto-rickshaws and taxi drivers.
Widespread instances of misconduct, such as a failure to ensure passenger safety and non-compliance with legal requirements, were observed among bike taxi operators.
The detrimental impact on public safety and existing transport services was highlighted through numerous complaints and a city-wide protest in 2013. The decision by the Transport Ministry to revoke the bike taxi scheme is considered a pivotal moment.
The responsibility now rests on the Transport Department and traffic police to effectively enforce the ban.
The collaboration with media partners in raising awareness, along with the unwavering support of the Transport Minister and Chief Minister, has played a crucial role in addressing this urgent issue.
