Bengaluru: Holi, the Festival of Colors, is an exuberant celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil.

Originating in India and Nepal, this vibrant festival is renowned for the playful smearing of colourful powders and water on friends, family, and even strangers.

Dr Sunil Kumar Prabhu, a Dermatologist and Aesthetic Physician from Aster RV Hospitals in JP Nagar, sheds light on the significance of colours during Holi and offers insights into ensuring a safe and healthy celebration.

Colours are deeply intertwined with the essence of Holi, symbolising the vibrancy of spring, new beginnings, and the diverse hues of nature.

The festival transcends social barriers as people from all backgrounds unite in a colourful celebration.

Dr Sunil Kumar Prabhu says, “While Holi is a time for joyous celebration, it is essential to consider potential health risks associated with the colours used during the festivities.”

He advises, “Various factors can trigger allergic reactions during Holi celebrations, including chemical allergies from synthetic colours, food allergies from traditional Holi delicacies, and environmental allergens like pollen and dust.”

Vibrant but potentially harmful due to chemicals like lead, mercury, and industrial dyes.

Natural Colors: Safer alternatives are made from plant-based ingredients, reducing the risk of allergic reactions and environmental pollution.

He said, “Cheap, synthetic colours may contain irritants like mercury, asbestos, silica, and mica, aggravating skin conditions such as eczema, hives, and psoriasis. The most common skin issue triggered during Holi is a rash, causing skin irritation, swelling, itching, redness, and pain.”

Tips for healthy celebrations

If you experience skin issues despite precautions, Dr. Prabhu recommends, “Washing the affected area gently without scrubbing, using a mild cleanser, opting for Lacto calamine instead of cosmetic lotions to soothe the skin, applying ice, allowing the skin to breathe, and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen are essential steps for managing skin issues triggered by Holi colours.”

He added, “To mitigate the risk of allergic reactions, it is advisable to wear protective clothing to minimise skin exposure, opt for natural or organic colours, use moisturisers or barrier creams to protect the skin, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure, conduct a patch test before applying colours, and carry necessary medications for known allergies.”

By taking these precautions, individuals can embrace the festive spirit of Holi in Bengaluru while prioritising their health and well-being. Dr Sunil Kumar Prabhu emphasises the importance of celebrating responsibly to ensure a joyful and safe Holi for everyone.
