Residents claim BBMP's ignorance as the cause of woman's death

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old woman died allegedly after being hit by a two-wheeler while crossing Kasavanahalli Main Road in southeast Bengaluru.

According to sources, the woman sustained severe injuries after she was hit by a two-wheeler and died on Friday evening.

The entire incident has put the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in the spotlight, as it did not pay heed to the residents’ long-pending demand for a high-rise pedestrian crossing (HRPC).

Following the incident, locals pointed fingers at the BBMP for its inaction in installing the HRPC.

It is claimed that due to encroachments by vendors along the roadside, pedestrians are forced to walk on the streets, posing a serious threat to their lives.

"Minor accidents occur every day on that road and it has become a common sight. We have been requesting the HRPC for months, but the BBMP pays no heed," said Vishnu Prasad, a member of the Bellandur Development Forum.

Another local mentioned that although residents have been demanding safe infrastructure for a long time, the issue is only highlighted now due to the death. Bharath G, a resident, said, "My parents, who are senior citizens, find it difficult to walk there. They often get injured due to rash two-wheeler riding," he said.

Last year, the Bellandur traffic police had appealed for the urgent installation of an HRPC in Kasavanahalli. During a Jan Samparka program held by the then Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, the police had raised the issue with the BBMP and requested skywalks and pedestrian crossings due to peak traffic.
