Mysuru: Mysuru City Police Commissioner Ramesh Banoth on Monday issued an advisory to people to be cautious about online and cyber crimes as every third person in in the nation has become victim of cyber crime-related incidents.
In a press release, he stated that people have lost their earnings and valuables by falling prey to cyber fraudsters.
Cyber crime police officials have received a lot of complaints that people have been cheated by by cyber frauds in the name of work-fromhome job offers and investment in crypto currencies besides share market investments.
As tackling cybercrime is most challenging, the city police have decided to spread awareness, he said.
He asked people to remain vigilant about a new scam dubbed as 'digital house arrest' as various cases have been recorded in many cyber police stations.
'Digital house arrest' refers to a fraud where impostors impersonating law enforcement officers dupe the victims into believing that their bank account, SIM card, Aadhaar card, or other cards linked to their bank account have been used for fraudulent transactions.
''In such cases, the fraudster identifies himself as an investigating official and calls the victim saying his Aadhaar card was used to transport drugs in packages which had been seized by the crime branch. They start interrogating the victim and ask him not to move out besides demanding that he download a Skype application and ensure remote access to the desktop. A fraudster appears in police uniform and interrogates the victim and asks the victim to funish his bank account details to check if he has received 'foreign funds'. Meanwhile, the fraudsters hack into his system and drain his account," explained an officer.
