BWSSB sees more than 9000 registered for ‘Jalamitra’

Bengaluru: In their push for the ambitious "Water Surplus Bengaluru," the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) confirmed on Thursday that 9,000 'Jalamitras' have joined the initiative within a month of its announcement.

Jalamitras play a role as volunteers in fostering awareness of watersaving methods. This comes at a time when the city is facing severe water shortages, exacerbated by soaring temperatures.

A failed monsoon, including resultant depletion of the water table, can be termed as the key reasons. The registered volunteers will undergo  workshops in each zone.

Their responsibilities include raising awareness on recycling treated wastewater, collecting details of water wastage from the public, addressing drainage problems, and preventing water overflow from storage sumps and tanks.

BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar advocates for increased formation of rainwater wells, with a target of 1,000 wells set. According to the Water Board, 650 of them have been laid so far.
