Strategies to combat liver disease

Bengaluru: Liver disease remains a significant health concern globally, with preventable cases accounting for 90 per cent of instances.

On World Liver Day Dr. Atif Ahmed, Associate Consultant in Gastroenterology at Trilife Hospital, highlights that liver-related deaths total around 2 million annually, affecting over 1.5 billion people worldwide.

In India alone, 268,580 liver-related deaths were recorded in 2023, comprising 3.17 per cent of total deaths.

Major contributors to liver disease include Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and hepatitis B and C. The rise of obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemics further escalates the prevalence of NAFLD.

Despite common misconceptions, liver issues in individuals with alcohol disorders or obesity can be detected early through routine screenings. To safeguard liver health, lifestyle modifications are crucial.

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, combined with a reduced intake of sugary beverages and processed meats, can protect the liver.

Regular exercise for weight management and moderation in alcohol consumption also play vital roles. Additionally, vaccination against hepatitis B and C significantly diminishes chronic liver disease risks.

Raising awareness about liver diseases and preventive measures is paramount.

Given the silent progression of many liver conditions leading to severe complications like cirrhosis and liver failure, early detection through routine screenings is essential.
