Bengaluru: As India commemorates National Dengue Day on May 16, Bengaluru finds itself battling a surge in dengue cases.

The city, known for its vibrant culture and booming IT sector, faces a concerning uptick in Dengue infections as it grapples with fluctuating temperatures and the impending monsoon season.

In the early months of 2024, Bengaluru witnessed a manageable number of Dengue cases. However, April brought an alarming spike, with reported cases soaring to 570, and the trend continuing in May.

Local health officials point to the city's tropical climate, ideal for mosquito breeding, as a significant factor behind this surge.

As the monsoon approaches, creating stagnant water pools conducive for mosquito proliferation, the urgency to raise awareness about Dengue prevention has become paramount.

Dr Aravinda S N, Lead Consultant - Internal Medicine at Aster R V Hospital, sheds light on the contributing factors to Bengaluru's Dengue surge.

He underscores the role of the city's rapid urbanisation, which has inadvertently facilitated mosquito breeding grounds amidst construction sites and inadequate waste management systems.

Moreover, the city's status as a major IT and travel hub increases the likelihood of virus transmission. Dr Aravinda emphasises that awareness on preventive measures is the key.

''We need to involve government agencies, healthcare providers, and community organisations in such initiatives. Debunking myths and rumours is crucial to ensure accurate information reaches the public, empowering them to take preventive action,'' he said.

“Early diagnosis and treatment play pivotal roles in Dengue management. Recognising symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, and rashes enables timely intervention, improving patient outcomes and curbing virus transmission,” he explained.

Post-infection, proper recovery is paramount to prevent complications. Dr Aravinda recommends prioritising hydration, adequate rest, and adherence to medical advice.

Mosquito control efforts at the community level, including removing stagnant water and using repellents, are essential to curb transmission. As Bengaluru observes National Dengue Day, it stands at a critical juncture with collective action needed to stem the tide of Dengue infections.
