Students, activists demand action on increasing suicide cases

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Around 100 students and activists had demanded the state government to turn their attentions to the student suicide cases taking place at a private university in Bengaluru, here at Freedom Park on Saturday.

On Tuesday, May 14, a second year B.Tech computer science student from PES University had allegedly jumped to death in the campus, marking the fourth such incident in nine months.

After reaching late to the examination hall, 21-year old Rahul was not allowed to sit, and was told to get backlogged, prompting him for the ultimate step.

“The statistic of four deaths in less than a year is harrowing. This is even greater than the number of soldiers dying in the borders,” said Dushyant Dubey, social activist.

Also known as St.Broseph,” Broseph demanded that the government outlaw student harassment by bringing legislation in the cabinet.

“Students should be empowered to file a complaint against university authority when they are harassed, with protection,” he claimed, holding the book of the Karnataka Education Act, 1983.

Parents of Aditya Prabhu, Girish and Asha were also one amongst present, demanding that the government form a special investigation team into this matter.
