BWSSB cracks down on unauthorised rainwater diversion into sewers

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In an effort to promote rainwater harvesting and alleviate pressure on the city’s drainage system, Dr V Ram Prasat Manohar, Chairman of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has ordered action against unauthorised diversion of rainwater into sewers.

During a meeting at the BWSSB head office, Dr Manohar addressed officials on the critical need for efficient rainwater utilisation.

“It is mandatory to make good use of rainwater by adopting rainwater harvesting systems,” he emphasised.

He highlighted that in many areas, rainwater is being directly funnelled into the sewerage system, exacerbating pressure on the infrastructure and wasting valuable water resources. The primary goal of utilising rainwater effectively is to significantly enhance Beng aluru’s groundwater levels.

Unfortunately, in numerous instances, rainwater collected via harvesting systems is improperly discharged into sewers, leading to wastage and increased drainage pressure.

This initiative aligns with directives from Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, aimed at preventing such practices and raising public awareness about the importance of rainwater harvesting.

Dr Manohar has also instructed officials to conduct a comprehensive survey of areas where rainwater is being directly channelled into drains. The BWSSB will take stringent actions against those responsible for such practices.

“A survey should be done regarding rainwater draining directly into drains within the service centres,” he stated, underlining the importance of curbing this practice to preserve rainwater and reduce sewer overload.

The BWSSB will also survey buildings that have yet to adopt rainwater harvesting systems. This initiative aims to educate property owners about the benefits of rainwater harvesting and the disadvantages of neglecting this eco-friendly practice.

Information collected will help in formulating strategies to encourage widespread adoption of rainwater harvesting. Implementing these precautionary steps will ensure sustainable water management during the rainy season and beyond.
