AI-mounted cameras to identify potholes, around 800 of them filled: BBMP Chief

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: As the deadline to fill potholes (May 31) edges closer, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is banking on Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered cameras mounted on engineers’ vehicles to identify potholes in arterial and sub-arterial roads, Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath told reporters on Wednesday.

“15 vehicles with cameras will move at a speed of 5 kilometres for this purpose. So far, they have identified around 700 potholes and they will be filled. This will be done only on arterial and sub-arterial roads for now," Girinath said.

The move was reportedly inspired by the initiative of the Electronic City Township Authority (ELCIA), where AI was used to identify potholes and they were filled accordingly.

When asked about water quality in the city, Girinath responded that the civic agency only checks water samples from the borewells in the 110 villages in the outskirts and Reverse Osmosis Plants (RO) in its jurisdiction.

“There is a 10 per cent decrease in contaminated water, so we send our samples to labs managed by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB),” he added.

Girinath also disclosed that the contract of the agency which hires teachers for the civic body-run schools stands cancelled.

“The education department will now take up the responsibility of hiring teachers for BBMP-run schools,” he concluded.
