MLC polls: Cong calls legislators' meet on Sunday
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Karnataka Congress has called a Legislature Party meeting on Sunday in the lead up to MLC elections of June 13.
The meeting will take place at Radisson Blue Atria Hotel at 6 pm. The meeting will be attended by 134 Congress MLAs, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. The attendees will include Minister for Science and Technology NS Boseraju.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala will also be in attendance. The last time the Congress Legislature Party had met was in February in the lead up to Rajya Sabha elections for five seats in Karnataka.
Back then, a mock voting session had taken place and the same might happen again. As many as 12 Council seats will fall vacant on June 17 and 11 of them are elected directly by the MLAs.
Congress is able to elect seven of those MLCs. BJP on the other hand can send three party leaders to the Council while JD(S) can nominate one.
Of the 11 Council seats, six are currently held by the BJP while Congress and JD(S) hold four and one respectively. Therefore, Congress stands to gain after their landslide victory in the Assembly elections last year.
