An unending struggle for a basic facility in Bengaluru: Streetlights!
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Ullal Main Road street near Bairegowda Layout, opposite BTS Layout in Bharath Nagar, has been without streetlights for months, which is creating serious safety issues for residents, particularly students from East West College girls' hostel and nearby paying guest(PG) accommodations.
The road becomes completely dark at night, which is dangerous for students when they return from evening classes or study sessions. It is incredibly scary to walk back to the hostel after my evening classes," confesses Priya, a secondyear engineering student.
"The darkness is overwhelming, and we always fear unwanted incidents." Students use flashlights and mobile phones to make their way home but these makeshift solutions are just not enough. Heavy traffic on Ullal Main Road adds to the danger, as vehicles whizz by with no regard for pedestrians.
Nidhi, another student, shares her worries saying, "We feel unsafe and anxious every night. The darkness attracts troublemakers. There have been instances of ragging and snatch thefts as well. We have reported these issues multiple times, but there has been no action."
Local residents and shopkeepers are also affected. They have voiced their concerns to the authorities, but the problem remains unresolved.
"We have written several letters to the municipal corporation and made numerous phone calls, but nothing has been done so far," laments Mr Ramesh, a shopkeeper in the area.
