Drivers in viral video scandals: Minister warns of termination
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Transport Minister Ramalinga Re d d y has issued a stern warning to the drivers and conductors of Karnataka's transport departments, including KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC.
In a recent media briefing in Bengaluru, Reddy emphasised that those involved in inappropriate conduct, such as making viral videos, would face termination without hesitation.
The warning follows a controversial incident last May when a video of a bus driver using an umbrella while driving went viral on social media. The driver, Hanumanthappa A. Killedara, was seen operating a bus on the Betageri-Dharwad route under the Dharwad unit with an umbrella in hand during the rain.
The video, captured by a fellow operator, quickly spread online, drawing criticism. The Karnataka BJP seized on the opportunity to criticise the state government, suggesting it was indicative of poor governance.
Senior BJP leader Basanagowda Patil Yatnal shared the video on social media, deriding the government’s management. The North-West Karnataka Road Transport Agency subsequently investigated and clarified that the video was intended for entertainment purposes, but the damage to the government’s image had been done.
Adding to controversy, another incident involved a KSRTC bus driver engaging in reckless behaviour while filming a reel. This distraction led to a tragic accident where bus collided with two bulls, resulting in their deaths.
The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted need for stricter regulations and oversight within the transport departments.
