Rising lifestyle diseases among B’lureans call for urgent correction

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In Bengaluru, as in many other urban centres, lifestyle diseases are on the rise due to rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, and changing dietary habits.

The city's rapid development and modernisation have brought about significant changes in the way people live, leading to an increase in various health issues. Dr Aravinda S N, Lead Consultant in Internal Medicine at Aster RV, highlights several pressing health issues in Bengaluru.

The city faces a high incidence of diabetes and hypertension, often referred to as the "twin epidemics," largely due to poor diet, lack of exercise, and rising obesity rates.

The stressful urban lifestyle further exacerbates these conditions. Obesity, particularly among young adults, has surged due to sedentary habits and the consumption of high-calorie processed foods. This trend significantly increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

Dr Aravinda also notes a rise in cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes, driven by unhealthy diets, smoking, and physical inactivity. Urban pollution and smoking have contributed to a rise in chronic respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD, stressing the need for better air quality and smoking cessation efforts.

Cancer rates, including lung, breast, and colorectal cancers, are also increasing due to lifestyle factors such as smoking and poor diet. Additionally, Bengaluru's fast-paced lifestyle has led to a rise in mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.

Dr. Aravinda emphasises the need for improved mental health support to address these urban stressors effectively.

Key challenges to work-life balance

Dr Aravinda emphasises that maintaining a work-life balance in today's fast-paced environment is challenging due to high work demands, constant connectivity through technology, long commutes, and competitive job markets.

These factors often make it difficult for employees to find time for personal and family life, resulting in increased stress and reduced well-being.

To improve mental and physical health amidst demanding work schedules, individuals should focus on self-care, set clear boundaries between work and personal time, manage their time effectively, take regular breaks, practice mindfulness, and seek support when needed. Employers also play a crucial role in supporting work-life balance.

Dr Aravinda said, “They can help by offering flexible work arrangements, encouraging breaks and time off, implementing wellness programs, creating a supportive work environment, leading by example, and providing resources for effective time management.”

Addressing the rise of lifestyle diseases in Bengaluru requires a comprehensive approach that includes personal lifestyle changes, supportive work environments, and robust public health policies said Dr Aravinda. By addressing these aspects, Bengaluru can enhance the overall health and quality of life of its residents.
