Police blame loopholes for surge in drug trafficking cases
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Madiwala police arrested a person for selling ganja near Jakkasandra Crematorium based on information from an informant.
During the raid, the police seized 10 kg of ganja worth Rs 4 lakh. Speaking with News Trail, Madiwala police officials stated that they have arrested ten individuals involved in ganja cases in the past year under their jurisdiction.
Most of the persons involved are from Punjab, Gujarat, and Odisha where the drug is cultivated in forests and mountain areas before being transported to southern India. The official mentioned that security in these areas is not stringent, allowing traffickers to transport ganja easily.
"Those we have arrested over the past year do not have criminal backgrounds. They are drug addicts and come from poor economic backgrounds," the official added.
Officials highlighted that the punishment for drug possession depends on the quantity. Individuals carrying less than 10 kg of ganja are fined, while those with more than 10 kg face imprisonment for upto 7 years.
Regarding the recent arrest, the accused has been brought to the police station, and a case has been registered under the NDPS Act. The investigation disclosed that the accused was selling ganja to youth and other consumers for illegal profit.
The accused was produced before the court on July 24 and has been remanded in judicial custody. The incident came to light on Tuesday.
