Reflecting on the past, or looking ahead to a long weekend?

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: A noticeable trend among young people is emerging: viewing I-Day not as a time for deep reflection, but as an opportunity for a long weekend.

With August 15 falling on a Thursday this year, many tech professionals are taking advantage of the extended break by taking “sick leave” on Friday, creating a four-day weekend.

Travel companies have capitalised on this trend, offering enticing getaway packages that appeal to those looking to make the most of the extra time off.

News Trail spoke with a few young professionals who have planned getaways for this extended break, revealing a shift in how I-Day is perceived in today’s fastpaced world.

Archita AS, a programme analyst, explained, “After working hard for the past few months, this long weekend is a chance for me to unwind and relax. While I respect and take pride in my nation, participating in flag ceremonies and receiving small sweets and chocolates don’t hold much significance for me. I prefer using this time to take a trip to Coorg with friends, where I can truly relax and recharge.”

While many tech professionals view I-Day as a chance for a long weekend getaway, historians, patriots, and the families of those who sacrificed their lives for the country offer a contrasting perspective.
