BBMP intensifies stray dog neutering and rabies control efforts

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: After several instances of stray dog incidents in recent times in Bengaluru, the Animal Husbandry department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has opened a helpline for residents to report packs of dogs with aggressive behaviour In compliance with the Supreme Court's directives and the Animal Birth Control Rules, a neutering surgery program is being conducted across all municipal areas. Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath was shocked to learn that packs of dogs still wander without being neutered, which poses danger to bystanders.

He reportedly directed officials to look into it. A rabies helpline (6364893322) for dog bite complaints and suspected rabies cases have been launched with Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) and Charlie’s Animal Care Centre - CARE Institute. The toll-free helpline ‘1533’ is available to take grievances. As on Sunday, the Palike has 424 kennels for individual dogs, eight kennels for 10-15 dogs, and four isolation kennels for rabies treatment, with plans to increase capacity. Rs. 1.77 rore has been allocated to bolster infrastructure at all ABC centres.
