CM urges people not to spread fake news as it upsets social harmony
Mysuru, NT Bureau: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah cautioned on Saturday that fake news poses a significant threat to the Constitution, undermines democracy, and disrupts social peace and harmony. Speaking at the award distribution ceremony organized by the Mysuru District Journalists Association (MDJA) at the Rani Bahadur Auditorium, he urged the public to refrain from spreading fake news, particularly on social media, as it can lead to social unrest and religious conflicts.
The Chief Minister stated that the state government will take strict action against those disseminating false information. He announced the establishment of fact-checking and cyber units in all police stations to address this issue effectively. Siddaramaiah emphasized that the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution is essential for democracy. He underscored the media's role as the fourth pillar of democracy, vital for the functioning of the legislature, executive, and judiciary.
He noted that any threat to the media is a threat to democracy itself, recalling former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s advocacy for a free press. He also encouraged the media to be more attuned to the genuine issues facing society. District Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa honored outstanding journalists during the event. Present at the ceremony were MLAs Tanveer Sait and D. Ravishankar, State Guarantee Implementation Committee Vice Chairperson Pushpa Amaranth, MDJA President Deepak, and senior journalists Ravindra Bhat and Ravikumar.
