Suicide: NHRC issues ‘conditional summons’ to B’luru top cop

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: In what may be a blow to the Bengaluru City Police (BCP), the National Human rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a “conditional summons” order to top cop B Dayananda on failing to submit a report on the suicide of Nikhil, a student from AMC College. The hotel management student took the ultimate step last year in December after a dispute with a female classmate, prompting the authorities to suspend him for two weeks, leaving him in despair. The All India Students Union (AISU) filed a complaint to the NHRC in January this year, alleging that the college authorities, including the dean, had harassed him. The Bengaluru Police were given reminders by the commission and on October 1, a conditional summon was issued. The NHRC also says that Dayananda need not appear to the hearing, if a report to the Commission is submitted duly, at least within a fortnight. However, failure to do so, may lead to further legal actions.
