Akka Café initiative launched to empower women
NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, Karnataka’s Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Livelihood, launched the state’s Akka Café initiative, highlighting its potential to boost women’s empowerment and socio-economic development. Speaking at the event, Dr Patil emphasised the initiative's focus on self-reliance and entrepreneurship, particularly in rural areas. “The Akka Café initiative will empower women and promote entrepreneurship, creating a lasting impact on Karnataka’s socio-economic landscape,” he said.
Launched under the 2024-25 state budget by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Akka Café aims to create sustainable livelihoods for women, especially those from Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The initiative supports women entrepreneurs by offering them opportunities to manage cafés showcasing local cuisine while maintaining high standards of quality and hygiene. In its first phase, the government plans to establish 50 cafés statewide, blending rural and urban locations. SHG women will receive up to Rs 15 lakh in grants for setup costs, including infrastructure.
