B'luru flooded, orange alert today & tomorrow

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has disclosed that 62.5 mm of rain battered the state capital on Tuesday, adding that they had issued an orange alert for Bengaluru Urban district for Wednesday and Thursday. The weather department attributes the rainfall to a well-marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, which intensified into a depression on Tuesday. As of 5:30 in the evening, the depression was some 490 km off the coast of Chennai. Moreover, a trough is also aiding the wet spell in Bengaluru and elsewhere in Karnataka. A trough is essentially a turning of the winds that accumulates moisture. IMD classifies yellow alert as “heavy rainfall”, which is anywhere between 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. Orange alert is regarded as “very heavy rainfall”, meaning anything between 115.6 to 204.4 mm. Moreover, a red alert is classified as “extremely heavy rainfall”, which is more than 204.5 m of rain.

Holiday declared for Bengaluru schools today

Schools in Bengaluru Urban district will remain shut on Wednesday following heavy rain forecast. ''As a precautionary measure in the interest of students, all taluk Anganwadi centres, private/aided primary and high schools of Bengaluru City will be closed on Wednesday," a government order stated. Government schools in the city are already closed for Dasara holidays.
