Unseasonal rise in tender coconut prices leaves vendors, consumers frustrated
NT Bengaluru Bengaluru: has been witnessing an unusual rise in tender coconut prices that has been concerning for both vendors and consumers. While it is common for prices to increase during summer, this year's hike has caught many off guard, as the rates continue to climb even during the monsoon season. Currently, tender coconuts are being sold at Rs 60-70 per piece, a significant rise compared to previous years, leaving many customers unhappy with the strain on their budgets. Shivaraj Gowda, a vendor in Banashankari, pointed out the unusual nature of the price increase. "Typically, during the rainy season, the prices of tender coconuts range between Rs 30-40. However, this year, we are seeing a spike even in monsoon, with rates higher than summer.
The high prices are affecting my sales as fewer customers are visiting," he said, expressing hope that the prices will drop soon. The rise in tender coconut prices is largely due to increased demand and reduced supply. Suresh Reddy, a vendor in Jayanagar, explained that tender coconut water is usually less in demand during cooler months, leading to lower prices. However, this year has seen a change in consumer behaviour. With rising health concerns, particularly dengue and dehydration, people are opting to drink tender coconut water throughout the year. “In June, tender coconuts were priced at Rs 20- 25. Now, with festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Dasara, and Deepavali driving demand, prices have soared to Rs 60,” Suresh said.
