Namma Metro marks 13 years of its B'luru journey
NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Namma Metro celebrated its 13th anniversary on Sunday, having transformed public transport in the city since its launch on October 20, 2011. Initially operating a 6-kilometer stretch from M.G. Road to Baiyyappanahalli, the metro has now expanded to cover 73.81 kilometres, serving over 800,000 passengers daily. The metro’s popularity has soared, recording its highest daily ridership of 917,365 on August 14.
As part of a collaborative project between the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has been instrumental in this growth. Currently, 97.84 kilometres of metro lines are under construction, with an additional 81.64 kilometres proposed. Plans are also underway to introduce driverless trains on the yellow line from RV Road to Bommasandra, following the successful completion of practical and safety checks. Commuters are eagerly anticipating the metro’s expansion to key areas, including Silk Board, which is expected to get connected soon. The ongoing enhancements promise to further alleviate traffic congestion, providing a reliable and cost-effective alternative to road travel in Bengaluru.
