In its drive to curb sale and use of single-use plastic in the city, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) continued to raid factories which manufacture such products. On Tuesday, it seized 5500 kilograms of single-use plastic, taking the total figure to 7700 kg, from 2200 kg on Monday. Godowns in Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli and West zones of the BBMP were raided by officials and marshals. Despite the BBMP strictly prohibiting single-use plastic in the city, petty shops and other small scale commercial establishments have been distributing single-use plastic to their customers.
The BBMP has repeatedly conducted awareness programs and has oriented merchants on the problems such plastics pose. In Bommanahalli, a godown near Singasandra had around 4500 kgs of plastic, which was seized by officials from the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML). A fine of Rs. 25,000 was collected from the owner.
