Customs officials at Kempegowda International Airport intercepted two passengers attempting to smuggle 40 rare and endangered animals into the city. The rescued animals include Aldabra giant tortoises, juvenile rhinoceros iguanas, and baby American alligators, all found in inhumane conditions. The operation, led by Customs Deputy Commissioner Animesh Garg, resulted in the immediate arrest of the suspects.
Garg confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the motives and the smuggling network involved. The seized animals, classified as vulnerable and endangered species, were being transported in cramped and hazardous conditions, raising concerns about animal welfare and the rise in wildlife trafficking.
