In view of the recent serial accidents and heavy traffic snarls on the Airport Road, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed four underpasses to curb traffic. Bellary Road leading to the airport, Tumakuru Road and Hosur Road have constantly been under the scanner for snail-paced traffic. The NHAI has reportedly identified junctions at Kodigehalli, Byatarayanapura, Jakkur and Allalasandra which have heavy traffic and are on the route towards Kempegowda International Airport near Devanahalli.
Traffic snarls, especially on the service road, can also be attributed to the construction undertaken by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) for its upcoming Blue Line, connecting the airport to Central Silk Board. KB Jayakumar, regional director of NHAI admitted that land acquisition and the pillars of the flyovers are a challenge while constructing these underpasses. In addition to the four proposed underpasses, two more are proposed near the Indian Air Force premises at Yelahanka and Sadahalli near the Airport toll gate. An EV charging station and a separate lane for buses from Hebbal have also been mooted.
