In response to parental demand, the Karnataka government has issued an order to introduce English-medium sections in 93 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). The funding for these new sections will be drawn from the development grants allocated for these schools in the 2024-25 Budget as per reports. According to officials from the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), preparations are underway to launch these sections in the 2025-26 academic year, as the 2024-25 academic session is already halfway through. The government established 286 KPSes statewide to bolster government schools and improve enrollment rates. These institutions aim to provide education from pre-primary (LKG) to Class 12 under one roof.
Currently, all KPSes conduct bilingual classes, which has contributed to an increase in student enrollment. Officials noted that the growing demand for KPSes and English-medium education prompted the DSEL to propose the addition of these sections, a request recently approved by the government. Karnataka is home to 46,757 government primary and high schools, educating 42,92,351 students. Among these, 2,686 bilinal chools including government primary schools, government Urdu schools.
