Chief Minister Siddaramaiahon Thursday inaugurated the city’s second Waste Transfer Station at Ward 138-Cheluvadipalya in Chamrajpet Assembly constituency. Earlier this year, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), threw open the first waste transfer plant at Ward 148-Ejipura in BTM Layout. Waste transfer stations help eliminate the process of collecting waste manually and transferring it to a larger compactor at a designated place of a street, which leads to generation of leachate and black spots. The tipper autos collecting waste at source can directly dispose of waste at the transfer station, which will segregate the waste for further processing.

These stations have the capability of handling around 200 metric tons of waste everyday. The BBMP is also involved in funding and constructing waste transfer stations. After the inauguration, BBMP chief Tushar Girinath told reporters that the third transfer station at HRBR Layout which is part of Sarvagna Nagar constituency, will open by January next year.

“The machines will take the waste out of the auto tippers directly, instead of having a worker taking it manually,” Girinath said, adding these are water tight handlers which can curb formation of leachate. “The waste will be compressed and will be taken for leachate treatment in another vehicle,” he added.
