In an exclusive interview with News Trail, Parvati Venugopal Nair, an accomplished actress and model in the South Indian film industry, opens up about her journey from modelling at age 15 to starring in films, including her latest Kannada project, Mister Rani. Parvati reflects on the challenges women face in the industry, the impact of OTT platforms on female representation, and her experiences with all-women teams.
What got you into modelling and acting? Modelling came first, even before my engineering. As for acting, it started with a jewellery ad I did. The director of that ad was so impressed because I cried naturally, without glycerin. After I did the shot this nationally acclaimed director offered me a film role on the spot.
What is the biggest challenge of working in today’s film industry? There are so many challenges. The film industry is incredibly uncertain you never know if a project you are committed to will move forward or if you will be replaced. There’s a lot of competition, and even the best opportunities can coincide, leading to date issues and tough decisions. Talent and hard work don’t always guarantee success either; there’s a big element of luck. This uncertainty doesn’t compare to other industries not even modelling.
What are some unique challenges that women face in the film industry? The film industry remains male-dominated, with most directors, producers, and lead actors being men, which influences casting and limits female-centred films from reaching the box office. Female actors earn less; even top actresses are paid below mid-level male actors. Beauty standards also differ: while “ordinary” looks are relatable for male leads, women are often cast based on conventional beauty, reinforcing a double standard.
Can you tell us more about your upcoming film? My latest Kannada film, Mister Rani, is a fun project, contrasting with a deeply emotional film I did previously. Mister Rani has a few emotional moments, but it’s mostly lighthearted, engaging, and packed with good comedy. It’s the kind of film that lets people escape their stress and have a good time.
How has the rise of OTT platforms impacted women’s representation? OTT plat forms have increased the visibility of female-oriented content. Some women-led projects have found success here, where people can watch without the same box office pressures. This is a good step forward, and it would help if these platforms prioritised fair pay for female leads and creators. With time, I hope this influence will shift the landscape of traditional cinema as well.
How do you handle that negativity? One thing I’ve learned is that sometimes, ignorance truly is bliss. It’s important to focus on the opinions of those who genuinely matter and try to ignore the rest. I try not to let it affect me and to stay supportive of others. I believe that if someone else is successful, it’s likely their time, and I’ll have my own.
What would be your dream role? I would love to work with Mani Ratnam. He is one of the few directors who brings out the best in actors, especially in his portrayal of women. He has a unique ability to make anyone look their best and push their acting skills.
What advice would you give to someone new to this industry? Here’s what I’d say: follow your passion, but keep expectations realistic. Avoid rigid goals like “I need to earn this much by a certain time.” Success doesn’t always follow a timeline, and focusing too much on outcomes can lead to stress. Be ambitious but avoid toxic competition. Remember, this industry doesn’t offer a stable monthly income; it’s unpredictable, so be prepared for ups and downs.
Can you share more about your work with 'Heaven For Animals'? I adore dogs, and I’m the face of “Heaven For Animals,” an NGO that rescues, feeds, and vaccinates street dogs. Recently, we set a record by vaccinating 1,001 dogs, which was an incredible experience. I dream of opening a dog shelter someday. Since childhood, I’ve wanted to create a safe space for stray and abandoned dogs. Dog parents are some of the kindest people I know.
