Pets as emotional anchors: Are Bengalureans choosing pets over parenthood?

Bengaluru, known for its vibrant lifestyle and fast-paced growth, is witnessing a unique trend: an increasing number of residents are embracing pet ownership, often prioritising furry companions over parenthood. This shift is not merely a lifestyle choice but a response to evolving perspectives on mental health and emotional well-being. As conversations around mental health gain prominence, pets are emerging as a therapeutic solution for combating loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The bond between pets and their owners is often profound, offering unconditional love and companionship that many find hard to replicate. At the recent Pet Fed Bangalore, a festival celebrating pets, several pet parents shared their heartwarming stories. One attendee, Sunita, opened up about her journey of healing after losing her partner.

“I was drowning in grief and loneliness,” she recalled. “Then, my father gifted me a puppy, Toka. He became my lifeline. Taking care of him gave me purpose and slowly helped me rediscover joy in life.” Sunita’s story is not unique. Many Bengalureans are turning to pets for solace in challenging times. Priyanka, another pet parent at the event, recounted how her cat, Kat, helped her navigate the isolating months of the pandemic. “Kat’s playful antics and quiet companionship kept me grounded. She was my therapist in fur,” Priya said with a smile. This growing trend is also driven by the changing dynamics of urban life. With demanding work schedules and rising living costs, many young couples are delaying or opting out of parenthood. Pets, with their simpler needs and abundant affection, are seen as fulfilling emotional gaps without the added responsibilities of raising children. Experts in mental health echo this sentiment. Even experts suggest that interacting with pets releases oxytocin, the ‘love hormone,’ and reduces stress hormones like cortisol.

For people battling mental health issues, pets can provide a sense of security and belonging. The surge in pet ownership is evident in Bengaluru’s thriving pet-friendly infrastructure, from pet cafes to grooming salons. Communities of pet lovers are also flourishing, offering support and camaraderie to first-time pet parents. As society becomes more attuned to mental health needs, pets are not just companions but a lifeline for many. Their presence fosters emotional resilience, proving that sometimes, healing comes with wagging tails and purring hugs.
