Bengaluru: A maternity and a post natal Hospital in the premises of the Kempu Cheluvarajamnanni (KC) General Hospital in Malleshwaram is set to be ready by next year, reports have confirmed on Sunday. This comes after the increased number of referral cases to the city from other districts of the state, in addition to the backlash received by the Congress government after serial deaths of pregnant women in Ballari. It is learnt that the deaths have pushed the health department to prioritise completing the hospital within 2025. Spread over 13.5 acres, the General Hospital has a 100 bed gynecology and obstetrics department. However, due to increased footfall, the current bed count is not enough for patients to be admitted.
A few cases are being referred to the Vanivilas Hospital, run by the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). The new facility will feature a 200 bed maternity ward. Foundation stone for the facility was laid in September this year. Constructed at a cost of Rs 66 crore, the maternity hospital will have four floors.
This new facility will also lessen the burden on Vanivilas Hospital, which hosts the largest maternity ward in the state. Reportedly, more than 8000 outpatients visit the hospital daily, and around 1500 deliveries are performed every month, including referrals from KC General, Jayanagar General and 26 maternity homes run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) In addition to a maternity hospital, a 50 bed trauma care centre is also built on the premises.
Costing at rs 35 crore, the building is expected to be open at the end of March. The hospital is reportedly mulling at shifting its emergency unit to the trauma care unity. A mortuary room, a kitchen building are other upgrades undertaken in the premises.
