Three inmates of Mysuru Central Prison die mysteriously

Mysuru: Three young inmates of Mysuru Central Prison who were undergoing treatment for illness at KR Hospital following complaints of stomach pain, have died mysteriously after 10 days. The deceased have been identified as Ramesh, a prisoner from Mandya and native of Hassan, Nagaraj, a native of Chamarajanagar and Madesh from Sathagalli in the city. According to officers, the inmates worked in the bakery unit of the jail and consumed essence in different quantities to get a 'kick' from the substance which is used for making sweets.
The inmates reportedly did not reveal this to health authorities till their condition deteriorated. According to sources, on December 28, all three prisoners consumed the baking essence whihc they considered as a substitute for alcohol when they were preparing cakes for the New Year celebrations. After developing severe stomach pain, they were initially treated at the hospital set up at the District Central Prison. When their condition worsened, they were rushed to KR Hospital where they revealed to the doctor about consuming the essence. Unable to respond to treatment, Nagaraj and Madesh succumbed on Tuesday while Ramesh passed away on Wednesday morning. The incident has raised serious concerns among the prisoners’ families, who are questioning the safety measures and care provided within Mysuru jail.
Mallu, one of the relatives of the deceased, Nagaraj, told reporters that he received information that his uncle was admitted to KR hospital for kidney failure, His uncle reportedly told him that the trio developed stomach ache after consuming cake along with bisibele bath served for prisoners in the jail. His uncle was convicted by a court in his wife's suicide case. Nagaraj was shifted to Mysuru prison seven months back from Chamarajanagar after he underwent six years imprisonment in Chamarajanagar.Mandi Police have registered a case.
