Pink warriors’ perseverance prevails: ASHA workers' relentless protest leads to historic victory

Bengaluru: In a historic triumph, the relentless protest by ASHA Workers in Karnataka culminated in success with the intervention of the Chief Minister. The workers’ steadfast demands were met with a significant victory, as the CM announced a fixed monthly honorarium of Rs. 10,000. This announcement was part of a series of important commitments. Alongside the honorarium, the CM guaranteed incentives for additional tasks performed by ASHA Workers, and a paid leave of three months in case of serious illness.

These provisions will be reviewed for quicker implementation. Furthermore, the Chief Minister assured the ASHA Union that discussions would take place in the upcoming budget in March to explore potential increments. The ASHA Workers endured deplorable conditions during their protest, facing extreme weather from scorching heat to biting cold. Many had to cope without access to clean bathrooms and some brought their children along, showing their unwavering commitment.

Their collective voice, sacrifices, and determination became the driving force behind their historic victory. This struggle highlighted their dedication to public health and the urgency of addressing their long-standing demands for fair wages and recognition. Their perseverance ultimately led to a breakthrough in their fight for justice. Freedom Park became the epicentre of a critical movement by the Karnataka State United ASHA Workers Association (Regd.), AIUTUC. For over 15 years, ASHA workers had been crucial in public health, yet faced financial struggles, inadequate pay and delayed incentives.

Despite technical issues with the “Asha Nidhi” portal, their protests led to success. Their demands, including a fixed monthly honorarium of Rs 15,000, Rs 2,000 for urban workers, a Rs 5 lakh retirement benefit, paid leave for illnesses and clearance of pending dues, were met. Other demands will be addressed at the departmental level, as affirmed by Shivakumar, Health Commissioner of Karnataka, and Dr. Prabhu Gowda, Senior Health Officer, who were present during the announcement. As a result of the government’s positive response, the ASHA Workers’ Union decided to withdraw their ongoing movement.
