Sunday showers due to easterly trough, says IMD

Bengaluru The 5.2 mm of rain that pattered Bengaluru’s streets on Sunday was the result of an “easterly trough”, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revealed. Showers started in parts of the city about an hourand- a-half before sunrise and continued one and off during the day. IMD scientist Puviarasan said that there had been “light rains” in some parts of the state capital and “moderate rains” in fewer parts of the city. “It is an easterly trough,” he said. “The rain is for today (Sunday) only.

Tomorrow (Monday), there is no rain,” he added. A trough is essentially a turning of the winds that accumulates moisture. “This is the easterly trough and it is moving from Andaman (islands) to the Gulf of Mannar, which is near south Tamil Nadu. Under this trough, we are getting this rain. It is moving westward. Tomorrow (coastal Karnataka) might get some light rain and then it’ll clear. That’s all,” Puviarasan said.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) area in Bengaluru received 7.3 mm of rain as per IMD. The Bangalore International Airport (BIA) area in Devanahalli in Bengaluru Rural district on the other hand received 2.7 mm of rain, the weather department said.

Coast receives most rain: Coastal Karnataka received the highest quantum of showers as Bajpe near Mangaluru city received 33 mm of rain, the most in Karnataka on Sunday. Hardanahalli village in Chamarajanagar district received 1 mm of rain on the same day. IMD said that maximum temperatures in Bengaluru may dip due to the wet spell to some 15 or 16 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the maximum temperature in the state capital was 27.4 degrees Celsius while mercury dipped to as low as 18.2 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the HAL area maintained the maximum and minimum temperatures of 27.2 degrees and 17 degrees respectively. The figures for Bengaluru’s international airport were 27.5 and 16.8 degrees respectively. Chikkamagaluru has been maintaining the lowest minimum temperature in Karnataka as of late, IMD added.
