ISHG's 49th annual meeting and neurogenetics conclave inaugurated

Bengaluru: The Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG) inaugurated its 49th Annual Meeting and International Conclave on Neurogenetics at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, celebrating India's advancements in genetics and healthcare applications. The event brought together experts to discuss research and innovations shaping the future of healthcare in India. Dr V K Paul, a Member of NITI Aayog, attended the event as Chief Guest, appreciating India's progress in genetic research.

He highlighted the launch of Immuneel Qartemi, India’s second CAR-T cell therapy for B-cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, and lentiviral gene therapy research for haemophilia A by Dr Alok Shrivastava of CMC Vellore. Dr Paul also emphasised national collaborations tackling rare genetic diseases like thalassemia, retinal dystrophy, and lysosomal storage diseases, with over 40 million screenings for sickle cell anaemia.

He affirmed, “India’s genetic research is driving innovation, positioning us as global leaders.” The ISHG President, Prof. BK Thelma, encouraged early-career researchers to engage in mentorship and collaboration, while Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS, celebrated the institute's 50-year legacy. She also introduced initiatives like Tele-MANAS and the Brain Health Initiative and unveiled lans or an incubation centre to foster innovation.
