3’s the answer: Mendez, Noguera help BFC win

Bengaluru: Despite top scorer Sunil Chhetri missing his penalty, Three points was the answer for Bengaluru Fc Coach Zaragoza, after a seemingly rejuvenated Blues shipped three goals past Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League at the Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday. Coming off a six game winless run, Zaragoza’s rallying cry for the fans to back his players has materialized in a performance built out of wicked football. Edgar Mendez’s high press put Jamshedpur’s defence on thin ice. However, It was Albino Gomes who saved face, including a penalty save off Chhettri in the eleventh minute.

If records are to go by, Gomes will be the only keeper to have saved two or more penalties off Chhettri. However, Jamshedpur’s frailty was exposed, after a drop ball was poorly taken. The clearance only found Chhetri who exquisitely put Mendez through and put it past Gomes, on the stroke of half-time. The second half saw no drop in intensity in Bengaluru’s game. They also ensured they kept their noses close to mistakes, and that has resulted in two brilliant goals from an unlikely source - Alberto Noguera.

His freekick in the 56th minute found Gomes in an awkward spot and the ball only found the back of the net. The third goal came as a huge sigh of relief for the Blues. It was Noguera who capitalised a heavy touch off JFC defender Lazar Cirkovic and slotted with his weaker foot. Bengaluru sit at fourth with 31 points. They next face North East United FC.

Brief scores: BFC 3 (E Mendez 43’, A Noguera 57’ 82’) bt. JFC 0.
