Don’t trouble innocents in Udayagiri violence probe, says MLA Tanveer Sait

Mysuru: Former minister and Congress MLA Tanveer Sait on Thursday urged Mysuru city police not to harass innocent people in the name of investigating the attack on Udayagiri police station. Speaking to reporters, he stated that the police had acted late against a youth who had posted derogatory content, which led to the violence.

He pointed out that the post in question contained derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammed, which angered thousands of youths, prompting them to gather outside the police station to demand immediate action. He clarified that the protest was not about the morphed images of Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav but was a reaction to the insult directed at Prophet Mohammed, which had deeply hurt their sentiments.

Sait claimed that the delay in filing an FIR against the accused had enraged the youth, leading to the attack on the police station. He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the conspiracy behind such posts and identify those responsible. While acknowledging that some individuals were involved in stone-pelting, he said the police should take action against those who broke the law but must not target innocent people. He added that he would not interfere in the probe and that the police had full freedom to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, city police have identified 20 youths involved in stone-pelting at the station on Monday night after reviewing CCTV footage and photographs of the incident. They have intensified their investigation following the registration of an FIR. The FIR mentions that nearly 1,000 youths had gathered in front of the police station, and it records injuries to a policeman and damage to police vehicles during the incident.
