Journalism students asked to focus on credibility, accuracy, objectivity during reporting

Mysuru: University of Mysore Vice Chancellor Prof N K Loknath on Thursday inaugurated a two-day 'Media Habba' and asked journalism students to focus on credible news. The event is hosted by the department of information and public relations, Karnataka Media Academy and the department of studies in journalism and mass communication of the varsity. He also advised students to focus on objectivity and accuracy in reporting besides engaging in deep studies while making continuous efforts to emerge as successful journalists.

As reading culture is declining in a digital world, the current generation of students are not reading much, he said while stressing the need for extensive reading to help journalists bring out a wide range of analytical reports. As fake news spreads rapidly, journalism students have more responsibility and should focus on fact checking and ensuring credibility, he said. Senior journalist Maya Sharma who was earlier with NDTV, wanted students to make use of new technologies like artificial intelligence, social media and digital media for constructive purposes as these new technologies have both advantages and disadvantages.

She also advised journalists to be unbiased and focus on ethics while reporting for media organizations Karnataka Media Academy chairperson Ayesha Khanum suggested that journalism students develop a questioning mindset.
