Hold your breath! Spl kids train amid stench

The 10 special children who come to the Community Learning Centre in Frazer Town have to put up with a fetid smell emanating from the nearby Conservancy Lane throughout their training session.
The Conservancy Lane has been turned into a public urinal and efforts to improve the situation in the past have been unsuccessful. The special children come to the Community Learning Centre to attend physiotherapy classes. The teachers have to shut windows and seal the ventilators to prevent the bad odour. “We have to cover windows with cardboard sheets to protect ourselves from bad odour. We want the authorities concerned to fix this problem as early as possible for the welfare of special children,’’ said a teacher.
A few years ago, Frazer Town Residents Welfare Association members in association with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) conservancy workers, had removed garbage and debris from the Conservancy Lane, covered the adjacent storm water drain and installed gates at two entry points - Moore Road and Mosque Road. The gates were meant to prevent people from either dumping garbage or relieving themselves.
However, the gates were removed after a few weeks by some miscreants. Once again the Conservancy Lane turned into a public urinal thus causing a lot of inconvenience for the special children and teachers.
It is learnt the correspondent and administrator of RBBPAM Educational Institutions has written a letter to BBMP Joint Commissioner Shilpa R. requesting for fixing gates at the Conservancy Lane connecting Moore Road and Mosque Road.
“This is to place on record that ever since the gates got removed from either side of the conservancy lane, we are facing tremendous inconveniences and hazards to our school children. As you must be aware our school wall runs all along the said conservancy lane and therefore we request you to install the gates again,” said Ashritha Anantharam, Director, RBBPAM Educational Institutions.
She said the school administration has to shut the boys’ toilet block at one corner on the school premises. “Most of the water taps are stolen or broken by the miscreants. We have abandoned the toilet block as there is no other option,” she said.
Coming down heavily on the miscreants and the BBMP authorities for the Conservancy lane mess, Habiba Subhan, a social worker, has said that a few miscreants have been misusing the school premises at night. “The miscreants jump the school compound wall without any hassles. The Conservancy Lane has become a nuisance for the students as well as the teachers,” said Habiba Subhan.
As usual, the BBMP assistant executive engineer has said that he would look into the matter.
