Women hold march to protect their rights

As the Karnataka Hijab row turned out to be a major issue across the country, the support for women’s rights also increased.
On Saturday more than 100 women, LGBTQI+ persons and trans persons gathered to march from the City Railway Station to Freedom Park. The march was organised by women in Bengaluru in the backdrop of growing harassment, discrimination and violence on Muslim women and communities in Karnataka.
It was a march to uphold the constitution - for dignity, autonomy, plurality and peace. The women in the march claimed that it is extremely important to assert that women’s fundamental rights were being violated. In a statement, they said, “In colleges across Karnataka, Muslim women have been denied entry if wear a hijab. Videos of teachers being forced to remove their hijabs outside their college premises were widely circulated. These incidents have quickly escalated to harassment, violence and threats in real life. The Women+ led march seeks to share solidarities with Muslim women across Karnataka, uphold the Constitution and assert women’s right to dignity, education and autonomy.”
Students, teachers, academicians, social workers, writers, artists and various people from different walks of life participated in the walk.
During the march they also demanded that all students take their examinations and full attendance is granted to all those students who were not able to attend classes.
