The Bengaluru Central University (BCU) on Monday will be holding its first convocation since being recognised as a university in 2018.

The varsity, which has around 242 colleges under it, had been delaying the convocation on account of the pandemic. As many as 41,768 students belonging to different faculties will be receiving their degrees in the Jnanajyoti auditorium in the college campus at 10:30 am. Of them, women constitute 64.51 per cent and number 26,945.

BCU will also be handing out some 77 gold medals, which are given to students who’ve attained the first rank. Of them 64 are postgraduate students, six are undergraduates and seven will be receiving gold medals and cash prizes instituted by donors. The university will be giving honorary doctorates to M.R. Jaishankar for social service, V. Ravichandran for excellence in cinema and Dr Satyanarayana for medicine.

At least six students have bagged multiple gold medals. Purva Gandhi (BCom) of Jain college VV Puram will be awarded three gold medals. Taqiya Khanum (BBA) of SSMRV Jayanagar, Duvvuru Alekhya (MBA) of Reva Institute of Science and Management, Ann Mary Sebastian (MSc Microbiology) of Ramaiah College MSR Nagar, Niveditha BS (MSc Biochemistry) of BCU and Aneeta Karen Pereira (MA French) of BCU will be walking home with two gold medals each.

Karnataka Governor and BCU chancellor Thaawar Chand Gehlot will be presiding over the convocation. Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman Dr K Kasturirangan will be delivering the convocation address.

BCU Vice Chancellor (VC) Lingaraja Gandhi said that it was a profound moment for the historic educational institution. “The first colleges sprang up in India in 1858 in major cities. Central College (as it was called back then) came into existence in 1886 and had been affiliated with Madras University.”
